Toward the end of 2015, KEYMILE and IDQ formed a framework partnership agreement. Part of this agreement saw KEYMILE adding quantum-cryptography solutions from ID Quantique to its product range for mission-critical communications networks. The move underscored KEYMILE’s strategic positioning as a leading supplier of highly secure mission-critical systems for local authorities, railway companies and power utilities.
In June of 2016 KEYMILE announced the launch of the new encryption card for its XMC20 multi-service access and transmission platform. The solution is unique in providing highly secure end-to-end encryption in mission-critical networks, while still maintaining the very high level of data availability required for such infrastructures. State-of-the-art encryption is based on keys generated by IDQ’s Quantis OEM component – a hardware-based quantum random number generator, providing the highest level of assurance.
In addition, a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) server from ID Quantique can be added to the encryption card. In this quantum-enhanced solution, key exchange is executed via the QKD server, which is connected via dark fibres. As a result, man-in-the-middle attacks are no longer possible. Any attempt to intercept the key exchange will lead to perturbation and immediate detection.
In addition to the use of IDQ OEM components, KEYMILE offers three ID Quantique products for resale in mission-critical communications networks. The first is the multi-link encryptor Centauris CN8000 which supports encrypted bandwidth of up to 10 x 10 Gbps in layer 2 networks. The second is the sophisticated Ethernet and Fibre-Channel Centauris-Link encryptor family. The Centauris products are certified based on the international security standards common criteria EAL4+ and FIPS PUB 140-2 level 3. The third product is the Cerberis QKD server.
Commenting on the acquisition, Claudio Facchin, President of ABB Power Grids Division, said “ABB is a global leader in communication networks for utility customers. The acquisition of KEYMILE’s mission-critical communication business will strengthen this position and extend our market reach in the industrial, transportation and infrastructure sectors. This move supports our growth plans and digitalization push as part of our ABB Ability offering, as we strengthen our position as the partner of choice in enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”
