Key automotive experts and technologists come together to explore the future of smart mobility
NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI), global leader in secure connected cars, today hosted the “NXP Connects Silicon Valley” event at the Club Auto Sport. Secure, connected self-driving cars require a vast range of technologies and expertise from different industries. The event brings together leading connected car influencers as well as innovative startups to showcase the latest innovations for the connected car.
Event includes demonstrations and high level discussions:
NXP Semiconductors N.V., [ui!] – the urban institute, and Microsoft demonstrate how sensor data from smart city, traffic infrastructure, and vehicles can be integrated to measure the pulse of a city and manage the traffic. The joint project pulls together live data from various sources to simulate a smart traffic center for the city of Las Vegas. This illustrates how electronics could solve today’s traffic challenges in an efficient way avoiding the need for additional steel and concrete.
The simulation runs on the urban institute’s [ui!] COCKPIT user interface. It compiles various data sources from public as well as private sector infrastructure in real time put it into the cloud – providing smart cities, such as Las Vegas, with new possibilities for applications. Examples are traffic flow and density information, energy consumption data, electric vehicle re-charging status, or emissions measurements.
NXP pushes additional data, collected by smart test cars, to the [ui!] “UrbanPulse” cloud which continuously update the user interface. The test cars have vehicle-to-x (V2X) capability, allowing cars to wirelessly communicate with each other and with intelligent infrastructure over a distance of 1 mile. Such data include, for example, the GPS positions of vehicles, as well as information on V2X events such as road works warnings, in-vehicle information, or Signal Phase And Time (SPAT) of traffic lights. NXP’s demo setup also involves RFID tags and readers for adaptive traffic lights, prolonging the green phase for pedestrians with special needs or for large groups of pedestrians crossing. This will significantly improve road safety. Vehicle-to-x (V2X) technology can save thousands of lives globally, the U.S. are currently working on a mandate for new cars to be fitted with this safety technology.
Microsoft provides the powerful cloud infrastructure for near real time data processing, data storage and big data analytics for the city data. The company offers smart cities the ability to tap into the solution portfolios of Microsoft and its partners and innovate at their own pace, deploying real-time solutions that can interoperate with and improve upon existing IT. Accelerating the cities’ intelligent traffic management, economic development, and environmental sustainability
