Add Bluetooth Classic plus Bluetooth Smart with the Microchip RN4677 Module

Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now offering the RN4677 dual-mode Bluetooth® module from Microchip Technology. This fully certified, embedded 2.4GHz module enables designers to easily add both Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) and Bluetooth Smart (Low Energy) capability for control and sensor applications. Delivering local connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT), the RN4677 bridges the product to smartphones and tablets for convenient data transfer, control, and access to cloud applications.

The Microchip RN4677 dual-mode Bluetooth module, available from Mouser Electronics, provides a complete wireless solution with an onboard Bluetooth stack, integrated antenna, and worldwide radio certifications in a compact 22mm × 12mm × 2.4 mm surface mount package. The module features seven general purpose inputs/outputs (GPIO) and a transparent UART mode for seamless serial data over Bluetooth BR/EDR using Serial Port Profile (SPP), and Bluetooth Smart using Generic Attribute (GATT) profile. The module provides transmit power up to 2dBm and receiver sensitivity down to ‑92dBm (Bluetooth Smart), and has a single operating input voltage from 3.3V to 4.3V. The RN4677 module provides a control interface based on ASCII commands, allowing designers to configure the RN4677 without complex configuration tools.

To support the RN4677 module, Mouser is now offering the Microchip RN4677 PICtail/PICtail Plus daughter board for order. This demonstration board lets designers evaluate the RN4677 and develop Bluetooth Low Energy applications. Out of the box, the board uses its built-in USB-to-Serial capability to communicate with the onboard RN4677. When plugged into a PC, the board will enumerate as a Communication Device Class (CDC) Serial device. Through a terminal program, designers can configure and control the module and transfer data with the provided easy-to-use command set. Designers can also plug the board into the Explorer16 board, the XLP 16-bit development board, or the PIC32 Starter Kit I/O expansion board to develop firmware on the host microcontroller of their choice, interfaced directly over UART to the RN4677 via the PICtail or PICtail Plus interface.

The Microchip RN4677 dual-mode Bluetooth module targets low-power, wireless applications, such as sports and fitness tracking, LED lighting, health and medical devices, Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, and home automation.
